Islamabad: Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Dr. Tariq Fazal Chaudhry has announced that the Federal Government is intensifying efforts to provide timely relief to the flood-stricken areas in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Gilgit-Baltistan (GB).
According to Radio Pakistan, during a Senate session, Dr. Chaudhry addressed a motion by Mohsin Aziz, highlighting that nine districts, including Swat, Buner, Mansehra, Shangla, and Batgram in KP, have been severely impacted by the floods. The government is actively supplying essential items such as food, medicines, blankets, tents, and generators to these affected regions on a daily basis.
Dr. Chaudhry informed the Senate that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif plans to visit the affected areas soon to assess the ongoing relief operations. He emphasized that the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) is collaborating with provincial governments, district administrations, and international climate-monitoring organizations to manage the situation effectively.
Providing an update on the damage incurred between June 26 and August 17, Dr. Chaudhry stated that 657 people have lost their lives, 629 have been injured, over 2,400 houses have been destroyed, and nearly 1,000 livestock have perished. He reiterated that while provinces act as the first responders during disasters, the Federal Government offers robust support through the NDMA and special relief packages.
The Senate session concluded with an announcement that the House will reconvene on Tuesday at eleven in the morning.
