Islamabad, At the Nuclear Energy Summit in Brussels, Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar emphasized the need for increased access to nuclear technology, financial backing for nuclear power projects, and a boost in the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) technical cooperation fund. Dar’s proposal aims to accelerate the development of nuclear energy across developing nations, ensuring they receive necessary support in terms of nuclear reactors, fuel, and infrastructure in alignment with safeguard obligations.
According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Dar advocated for the catalyzation of financing for nuclear energy through multilateral development funds and suggested that the IAEA’s capacity for technical assistance in the peaceful use of nuclear energy could be enhanced by either a dedicated funding stream or increased allocations to the existing technical cooperation fund.
Highlighting Pakistan’s commitment to the global nuclear sector, Dar pointed out that the country brings a century of reactor-years’ experience in the safe operation of nuclear power plants. With nuclear energy comprising approximately eight percent of Pakistan’s installed electricity generation capacity, Pakistan operates six nuclear power plants generating 3,530 MW of electricity.
Dar reaffirmed Pakistan’s readiness to share its extensive experience and expertise in the peaceful uses of nuclear technology with the international community. He noted that Pakistan’s fully trained human resources are well-equipped to support nuclear power infrastructure globally. Furthermore, he assured that Pakistan’s robust regulatory infrastructure guarantees the comprehensive safety and security of its national nuclear installations and materials across all domains.
Pakistan’s stance at the Nuclear Energy Summit underscores its role as a steadfast partner in the international pursuit of harnessing nuclear technology for energy and other peaceful purposes, showcasing its readiness to contribute to global nuclear safety, security, and development.
