Governor Punjab calls for urgent action on flood management amid launch of trade directory

Lahore: In a ceremony marked by a blend of celebration and caution, Governor Punjab Sardar Saleem Haider inaugurated the Directory of Trade and Industry 2025 by the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI). While launching this comprehensive resource aimed at invigorating business connections and investments, Governor Haider also drew attention to the pressing need for effective flood management, spotlighting the catastrophic impacts of recent floods in Pakistan.

The directory, a significant tool for the business community, encompasses detailed profiles of 36,500 members categorized across various sectors including manufacturing, exporting, importing, trading, and services. The publication serves as a pivotal resource for identifying trade partners and enhancing economic collaboration both locally and internationally.

LCCI President Mian Abuzar Shad, along with other chamber officials, emphasized the directory’s role in fostering economic growth. However, the event took a serious turn as discussions veered towards flood-related challenges. President Shad handed over a cheque of Rs. 2.5 million for flood relief, underscoring the urgency of addressing Pakistan’s recurring flood disasters.

Governor Haider lamented the lack of major dam constructions post-Tarbela and Mangla, stressing the necessity for accountability in allowing housing developments on riverbeds. He commended the Sindh government’s efforts in providing solar-powered homes for flood victims, but emphasized that comprehensive water management strategies, including dam constructions, are crucial for mitigating future disasters.

Expressing grave concerns, President Shad revealed the staggering economic losses inflicted by the floods, urging immediate action on dam projects like the Kalabagh Dam to enhance water storage and electricity generation capabilities. He highlighted the detrimental impact of unchecked housing developments on riverbeds, advocating for stringent measures to prevent such practices.

As the event concluded, the focus was clear: while the trade directory heralds a promising avenue for economic advancement, the looming threat of natural disasters necessitates urgent, coordinated efforts in flood management and infrastructure development to safeguard Pakistan’s future.
