Cape Town, Huawei and MTN South Africa were awarded the “Sustainability Champion of the Year” at AfricaCom, the largest annual telecommunications industry event in Africa. The award recognizes their innovative contributions to sustainable solutions in the region.
According to Huawei, the collaboration between MTN South Africa and Huawei focuses on addressing South Africa’s power crisis through the launch of a flexible and intelligent green site solution. This solution utilizes green and intelligent technologies for end-to-end site reconstruction and reinforcement, including power supply, distribution, load, and intelligent operations and maintenance (O&M).
Key innovations of this project include anti-theft reconstruction and smart power consumption technologies that adapt to power outages and weak power grids, ensuring over 99% energy availability at sites. Huawei’s advanced OWS+NetEco intelligent O&M platform is implemented to optimize energy efficiency using AI technologies for solar, mains, and diesel power supply.
This collaboration not only improves wireless network coverage in South Africa but also supports MTN’s Net-Zero strategy by building a green and simplified infrastructure. The successful implementation in South Africa is set to be applied in neighboring countries such as Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, and Kenya to address similar power challenges.
The recognition at AfricaCom highlights Huawei and MTN South Africa’s commitment to innovative and sustainable solutions in the telecommunications sector, contributing significantly to the development and well-being of communities across Africa.
