Dongguan, Huawei has made significant strides in promoting digital inclusion by bringing connectivity to 90 million people in remote regions across nearly 80 countries. This achievement is part of its commitment to the International Telecommunication Union’s (ITU) Partner2Connect (P2C) Digital Coalition, as announced in the company’s first progress report since joining the Coalition last year.
According to Huawei, the announcement was made by Dr. Liang Hua, Chairman of the Board of Huawei, at the company’s 2023 Sustainability Forum, themed “Thriving Together with Tech: Realizing Sustainable Development.” The forum featured key figures like ITU Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin, Jeffrey Sachs, President of the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network, and representatives from various telecommunications ministries and regulators, including those from Pakistan and Ghana.
During the event, Dr. Liang emphasized the importance of next-generation digital infrastructure, such as connectivity and computing power, in driving socio-economic development. He likened this digital infrastructure to physical infrastructure like roads, highlighting its crucial role in sustainable development.
Doreen Bogdan-Martin, Secretary-General of ITU, echoed this sentiment, urging a combined focus on technology and sustainable development to build a digital future that benefits both people and the planet.
To further its commitment to digital inclusion and talent development, Huawei has deepened its partnership with ITU by launching the “ITU Generation Connect Young Leadership Programme in Partnership with Huawei.” This fellowship, opening for applications early next year, will support 30 young visionaries (aged 18-28) annually for three years, helping them use digital technology for community development.
Jeff Wang, President of Huawei’s Public Affairs and Communications Department, expressed pride in the partnership with ITU and the impact young visionaries can make globally. The fellowship includes financial support for projects, mentoring, and opportunities to participate in joint events.
Dr. Cosmas Luckyson Zavazava, Director of ITU’s Telecommunication Development Bureau, praised the initiative, highlighting the importance of digital technologies in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and empowering youth to contribute to the global digital ecosystem.
The P2C Coalition, initiated by ITU, aims to foster meaningful connectivity and digital transformation worldwide, with a focus on remote communities lacking digital access. Huawei’s commitment, part of this global initiative, includes a goal to connect about 120 million people in remote areas in more than 80 countries by 2025. Huawei’s efforts have also provided training opportunities in Cambodia, ITU’s first P2C partner country, in collaboration with local ministries and universities.
