Islamabad: Officials in Islamabad have convened to strategize proactive measures against the increasing threat of pollen allergies, focusing on the removal of pollen-producing trees in the city. The meeting, chaired by Dr. Mukhtar Bharath, the Prime Minister’s Coordinator for Health, included key health and environmental officials who emphasized the need for immediate action to mitigate the seasonal rise in allergy cases.
According to Press Information Department, the meeting highlighted the importance of replacing pollen-producing trees, particularly Paper Mulberry, identified by the Meteorological Department as a major contributor to the city’s rising pollen count. Dr. Bharath stressed the urgency of implementing a comprehensive plan to reduce allergy cases in Islamabad before the pollen season commences in early March. The Capital Development Authority (CDA) presented a phased plan targeting these trees, while also recognizing the necessity of public awareness campaigns and collaboration with civil society.
The Director General of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) advocated for a holistic approach that includes replacing invasive grasses and involving educational institutions in awareness efforts. Additionally, the Secretary for Health, Nadeem Mahbub, called for strengthened efforts at the National Institute of Health’s allergy center and directed local health officers to engage medical staff in disseminating protective measures to the public. The meeting concluded with a reinforced commitment to prioritize health and reduce pollen allergies through collaborative efforts with various stakeholders.
