Japanese delegation calls on Secretary Industries

Islamabad, June 14, 2012 (PPI-OT): A two-member delegation of the Yamaha motorcycle Japan called on Federal Secretary Ministry of Industries Aziz Ahmed Bilour and presented their proposals regarding the establishment of a new motor cycle plant in Pakistan and a subsequent relief in the import duty on motorcycle parts.

They said that Yamaha is bringing new technology to Pakistan and being a new entrant they need some additional benefits to survive in the existing competitive market of Pakistan. They demanded that Yamaha must be allowed to import parts at a duty of 5%.

The Ministry of Industries (MoI) was however, of a different view. It did not agree to the demands of the delegation and informed them that the import duty was already brought down from the 15% to 10% which is acceptable to all the players of the industry. The Ministry accepted that this subject falls exclusively under the purview of Ministry of Industries and no other Ministry has a domain over it.

Mr. Bilour said that the MoI is keen to bring in new investors in the country but not at the cost of the existing industry. He was of the view that the Ministry will take every possible measure to safeguard the interests of the motor cycle industry and vendor industry which employs thousands of workers. The Secretary advised the delegation to come up with new proposals which suit their interests and do not, in any way, hamper the interests of the local manufacturers.
