Karachi, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah announced the solarization of small, isolated villages across the province, aligning with Chairman Bilawal Bhutto’s election manifesto. The Village Electrification program aims to implement solar and wind hybrid systems through public-private partnerships, enhancing sustainable rural electrification.
According to Chief Minister Sindh, during a comprehensive review at the CM House, attended by provincial energy officials and urban leaders, the strategy for the Sindh Solar Energy Project (SSEP) was detailed. This initiative, backed by a World Bank loan, focuses on developing 400 MW solar parks, solarizing public buildings, providing home solar systems, and advancing solar technology and skills training.
The Chief Minister emphasized the significance of the community’s role in sustaining the energy infrastructure, including the management of operational costs. Minister for Energy, Nasir Shah, highlighted the project’s progress, including land allocation for solar parks and the advancement of rooftop solar installations on public buildings.
The discussions also covered the operational challenges and regulatory approvals needed to facilitate project components, notably grid connection issues. The Chief Minister directed prompt resolution of these challenges to expedite the solar parks’ development, particularly in Manjhand and Karachi districts.
Additionally, the project’s distributed solar component has achieved considerable success in solarizing public sector buildings, with further expansion planned. A new strategy for the Solar Home Systems initiative was outlined, leveraging the Benazir Income Support Program’s data to identify beneficiaries, aiming to improve the project’s reach and impact.
The Chief Minister’s focus on training solar technicians, with notable female participation, highlights the broader goals of job creation and gender inclusion in the renewable energy sector.
