Lahore Takes Strict Measures Against Environmental Pollution and Smog

The Punjab government has intensified its anti-smog operations, issuing a warning notice to the private contractors of C and W to improve air quality, under the directives of Senior Provincial Minister Maryam Aurangzeb. According to Directorate General Public Relation – Govt of Punjab, this enforcement marks the first historical issuance of such a notice by the Department of Environmental Protection as part of a broader campaign to tackle environmental pollution in Punjab. The operations have commenced from the Babu Sabu Interchange, with contractors given a 7-day ultimatum to make significant improvements in the air quality index. Minister Maryam Aurangzeb warned that failure to meet the deadline would result in hefty fines. Under the leadership of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, the government has launched a comprehensive crackdown on environmental hazards, particularly targeting the harmful practice of burning tires, which contributes significantly to the region’s smog. The campaign includes acceler
ated actions against factories that release toxic chemicals and black ash into the air. The minister also highlighted the closure of several pyrolysis plants, which are responsible for producing dangerous byproducts through tire melting. These facilities have been a major concern due to their emissions of carbon monoxide and other toxins that pose severe health risks, including cancer and respiratory diseases. To further the government’s efforts, operations have expanded to include the demolition of identified pyrolysis plants and the severing of their electricity connections, significantly curbing their operational capabilities. The senior minister underscored the urgent need for collective action among all stakeholders to mitigate the adverse effects of pollution and protect public health.
