Lahore’s Traffic Overhaul: A Collective Effort for a Smoother Commute

Lahore: In a concerted effort to manage the sprawling traffic and improve infrastructure in Lahore, Chief Traffic Officer Athar Waheed has unveiled a comprehensive 20-point agenda under the ‘First Clean and Then Clear’ program. This initiative aims to restore the city’s beauty and ensure efficient traffic management, as discussed at a recent meeting with the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI).

According to a statement by Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry, CTO Waheed emphasized the necessity of public-private partnerships and the utilization of unused government land for temporary parking solutions. He highlighted the city’s significant population, which exceeds that of 122 individual countries, and the corresponding need for a collaborative approach to city management.

CTO Waheed also addressed the persistent issue of beggary at traffic signals, noting a reduction in numbers due to traffic police efforts. He advocated for updating laws to effectively tackle the problem and stressed the importance of mandatory helmet use for motorcyclists and loader rickshaw riders.

LCCI President Mian Abuzar Shad expressed gratitude to the CTO for resuming the driving test process for new licenses at the Chamber. He praised the professional traffic management during major events like the ICC Champions Trophy and emphasized the need for similar plans during the upcoming Pakistan Super League matches.

Shad pointed out the challenges faced by the traffic department in managing over seven million vehicles daily, urging traffic wardens to focus more on managing the flow rather than issuing fines. He also called for increased collaboration with TEPA to remodel high-traffic zones.

LCCI Vice President Shahid Nazir Chaudhry acknowledged improvements in traffic law compliance with the introduction of electronic violation tickets. He proposed further measures such as increased penalties and the installation of tire killers to prevent one-way violations.

The meeting underscored a shared commitment to refining Lahore’s traffic system, emphasizing the role of both public institutions and the business community in this endeavor.
