National Conference Criticizes Increased Powers of Lt. Governor in Jammu and Kashmir

Jammu: The National Conference has openly criticized the BJP-led government for diminishing the democratic voice in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir by enhancing the authority of the Lieutenant Governor over the elected representatives of the region.

According to Kashmir Media Service, during a daylong conference in Jammu, NC leaders including Ajay Sadhotra, Rattan Lal Gupta, and Raghubir Singh Manhas expressed concerns over the central government’s recent actions. They claimed these measures have significantly reduced the influence of local elected officials and obstructed their ability to meet the region’s needs.

The NC representatives argued that the centralization of power in the hands of the Lieutenant Governor not only sidelines the elected representatives but also impacts the overall governance and stability of the region. They pointed out that the local population is already facing numerous hardships due to the lack of essential services, and now, the sense of security is further threatened by ongoing violence, contradicting the central government’s claims of peace in the area.

The leaders urged New Delhi to reconsider its strategies and restore genuine democratic processes in Jammu and Kashmir to effectively address the pressing challenges within the region.
