Pakistan and China Set to Boost Sugar Production and Export

Lahore, The Pakistan China Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCJCCI) has outlined a vision for Pakistan and China to significantly increase the production and export of high-grade sugar. This announcement was made by Moazzam Ghurki, President of PCJCCI, during a think tank session at the PCJCCI Secretariat. Ghurki emphasized the potential for a ‘sweet revolution’ in the sugarcane cooperation between the two countries, enhancing the already strong bilateral relations.

According to Pakistan-China Joint Chamber of Commerce & Industry (PCJCCI), the PCJCCI’s role is to bridge the gap between Chinese and Pakistani experts and provide a collaborative platform for agricultural advancement. He stressed that through joint efforts, Pakistan and China could become major sugar exporters. Ghurki highlighted the importance of ‘Tissue Culture’ in revolutionizing sugarcane production, noting that the Chinese Academy of Tropical Agriculture Science (CATAS) has been instrumental in training scientists worldwide, including offering 100 training courses to over 4,000 participants from more than 90 countries.

Fang Yulong, Senior Vice President of PCJCCI, pointed out that while Pakistan is traditionally an agricultural country, it needs to modernize its sector to meet international standards. Yulong emphasized the rejection of conventional seeds by CATAS, advocating for disease-free seedlings as optimal for sugarcane production. With the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) nearing completion, Yulong stated that China is ready to offer its latest agricultural technologies to modernize Pakistan’s agriculture sector.

Vice President of PCJCCI, Hamza Khalid, addressed the need for Pakistan’s sugarcane industry to access leading sugarcane varieties that offer disease resistance. He called for a breeding program in Pakistan with Chinese assistance. Salahuddin Hanif, Secretary General of PCJCCI, also echoed the sentiment of significant cooperative potential in the agriculture sector between China and Pakistan, particularly in the sugar industry. This cooperation is seen as mutually beneficial, providing opportunities for learning and growth in both countries.

The PCJCCI’s initiative represents a strategic step towards strengthening agricultural ties between Pakistan and China, potentially positioning both nations as key players in the global sugar market.
