Pakistan and Djibouti Forge New Diplomatic Path with MoU

Djibouti: Pakistan and Djibouti have entered a new phase of diplomatic relations with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Bilateral Political Consultations. The agreement was formalized on January 14, 2025, during a ceremony in Djibouti. Representatives from both nations expressed optimism about the potential for enhanced collaboration in trade and investment.

According to a statement by Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the MoU was signed by Mr. Hamid Asghar Khan, the Additional Foreign Secretary of Pakistan’s Africa Division, and Mr. Mahmoud Ali Hassan, Djibouti’s Permanent Secretary General. Following the signing, the two countries conducted the inaugural session of the Bilateral Political Consultations.

During the session, both sides assessed the current state of their bilateral and multilateral partnerships, highlighting areas such as political, economic, defense, and security relations. They also deliberated on strategies to strengthen these ties through increased engagement across various levels.

The discussions also covered regional and international issues, with particular attention given to the Middle East and the Horn of Africa. Both nations reiterated their commitment to mutual cooperation in addressing these concerns.

The relationship between Pakistan and Djibouti has been growing since Pakistan’s establishment of a resident mission in Djibouti in May 2022. Future engagements include a planned session of the Bilateral Political Consultations in Islamabad next year and a potential visit by Djibouti’s Foreign Minister. Additionally, the formation of a Joint Business Council is anticipated in the first half of 2025.
