Pakistan Calls for UN Action on Kashmir and Palestine at Security Council Debate

Geneva, Pakistan has urged the United Nations Security Council to take decisive action to end foreign occupations and uphold the rights to self-determination for the people of Kashmir and Palestine. This appeal was made during a debate on the protection of civilians in armed conflict, highlighting ongoing violations and the need for stronger international legal oversight.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Pakistani Ambassador Akram emphasized the urgency of addressing the root causes of conflicts and promoting political solutions during the debate. The discussion marked the twenty-fifth anniversary of Security Council resolution 1265 on civilian protection in conflict zones and the seventy-fifth anniversary of the 1949 Geneva Conventions. Ambassador Akram called on the Security Council to ensure adherence to international humanitarian law and to hold perpetrators of war crimes accountable.

In his speech, Ambassador Akram specifically criticized the actions of Israel in Gaza, describing the situation as a “plausible genocide” that tarnishes the global reputation and moral responsibility of the international community. He highlighted the International Criminal Court’s moves to issue arrest warrants for Israeli leaders, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as a critical test of the court’s credibility.

The envoy also drew parallels with the situation in Jammu and Kashmir, where he claimed a significant military presence has led to widespread human rights violations, including over 100,000 deaths and the detention of thousands of young boys. He asserted that the campaign of suppression in Kashmir aims at a ‘Final Solution’ to the dispute, with local leaders advocating for self-determination facing imprisonment or death under suspicious circumstances.

Ambassador Akram lauded the adoption of resolution 2719 (2023), which supports the African Union’s partnership for peace enforcement, calling it a milestone in the collective effort to protect civilians. He stressed the importance of strengthening the UN’s capacity, in cooperation with regional organizations like the African Union, to enforce peace and protect civilians based on international legal standards.

The Pakistani representative’s statements underscore a persistent call for global interventions that not only prevent conflicts but also address humanitarian crises and violations of international law in conflict zones like Kashmir and Palestine.
