New York, Ambassador Munir Akram, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, announced that Pakistan is vying for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2025-26 term. In a virtual address to the Pakistan Students Association Coalition in the United States, Ambassador Akram outlined the significance of this bid in promoting the interests of developing nations and advancing peace in regions such as the Middle East and Africa.
According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Ambassador Akram highlighted Pakistan’s active engagement in various UN roles, including its presidency of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), previous non-permanent memberships on the Security Council, and leadership of the Grouping of G-77 plus China. He cited Pakistan’s advocacy during its second ECOSOC presidency in 2021, emphasizing efforts to promote vaccine equality and the creation of financial mechanisms like the Special Drawing Rights (SDR), which provided $650 billion to help developing countries manage the economic fallout from COVID-19.
Furthermore, Ambassador Akram underscored the current initiative to redistribute unused SDRs to developing nations facing significant challenges in achieving Sustainable Development Goals and combating climate change. He also discussed the broader state of global and regional challenges, reinforcing Pakistan’s commitment to international diplomacy and development.
