Pakistan Seeks to Capitalize on UN Carbon Trading Opportunities

Islamabad: In an effort to harness economic benefits from environmental sustainability, Pakistan is actively exploring the potential of the United Nations’ carbon trading system. A meeting held between Romina Khurshid Alam, the Coordinator to the Prime Minister on Climate Change, and a delegation from the United Nations Environment Programme’s Denmark Mission underscored this initiative.

According to Press Information Department, during the meeting, the Senior Economist and leader of the U.N. delegation briefed Romina Khurshid Alam on how Pakistan could leverage carbon market-related initiatives across various sectors including cement, oil and gas, textile, and other industries. The U.N. team pledged comprehensive support, both technical and advisory, to help Pakistan build the necessary policy infrastructure to participate effectively in international carbon credit markets.

The discussions concluded with a mutual agreement to enable Pakistani industries to generate and sell carbon credits on international platforms, potentially opening a new revenue stream for the country. Both parties recognized the significant economic potential that carbon markets hold for Pakistan, particularly in contributing to global greenhouse gas emission reduction efforts.
