Pakistan Trains Customs and Enforcement Officers on Ozone Protection

Islamabad, In celebration of World Environment Day 2024, the National Ozone Unit (NOU) of the Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination (MoCC and EC) held a training program for Customs and Enforcement Officers on the Montreal Protocol and the control of HCFCs.

According to Press Information Department, the training, which took place on June 5, 2024, in Islamabad, was conducted by the NOU in collaboration with Pakistan Customs. The session was directed by Mr. Iftikhar ul Hussain Shah Gillani, Additional Secretary/NPD of the NOU, and managed by Dr. Saleem Janjua, National Programme Manager of the NOU. The program focused on the critical role of customs and enforcement officers in controlling the illegal trade of ozone-depleting substances (ODS) and supporting the enforcement of ODS regulations. Madam Romina Khurshid Alam, Coordinator to the Prime Minister on Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, emphasized the government’s commitment to climate action and the importance of the training in fulfilling Pakistan’s obligations under the Montreal Protocol.

Mr. Asim Rehman, Additional Collector of Customs Academy of Pakistan, highlighted the integration of environmental considerations into customs operations, urging officers to actively participate and enhance their knowledge on the subject. The event also included technical presentations on various aspects of ODS control and management. The training was attended by numerous customs and enforcement officers who recognized the importance of protecting the ozone layer and ensuring compliance with international environmental agreements.
