Pakistan Urges UN Investigation into Advanced Arms Acquisitions by Terrorist Groups

Islamabad, Pakistan has officially called for an investigation into the acquisition of sophisticated weaponry by terrorist organizations, including Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, during the Fourth Review Conference of the UN Programme of Action on Small Arms and Light Weapons, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Munir Akram, emphasized the urgent need for a global effort to understand and halt the flow of advanced arms to terrorist and criminal groups. He advocated for a robust campaign to recover all weapons from entities like the TTP and stressed the collective responsibility of states and the UN to prevent the illicit trade, transfer, and diversion of these weapons.

Ambassador Akram also highlighted the challenges posed by the illicit proliferation, accumulation, and misuse of small arms and light weapons (SALW), noting their role in exacerbating conflicts, fueling terrorism, and undermining global peace, security, and sustainable development. He pointed to emerging technologies, such as drones and unmanned aerial vehicles, as complicating the control of increasingly lethal small arms.

Reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to the UN Programme of Action, Ambassador Akram criticized the limitations of current supply-side approaches to SALW issues. He called for intensified efforts and resources to resolve ongoing conflicts, end terrorist activities, and dismantle organized crime networks.
