Pakistani Exports to U.S. Could Double as Bilateral Trade Surpasses $7 Billion

Karachi: Pakistan’s trade relations with the United States have reached a significant milestone, with the bilateral trade volume crossing the $7 billion mark in 2023. This upward trajectory is continuing into 2024, with trade figures already surpassing $6.3 billion in the first ten months.

According to Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry, this growth highlights the potential for further expansion of Pakistani exports to the U.S. market.

President of FPCCI, Atif Ikram Sheikh, highlighted the unique trade surplus Pakistan enjoys with the U.S. and the promising prospects for doubling this trade volume in the coming years. He emphasized the rising demand for Pakistani products in the U.S., particularly in information technology, and the anticipated diversification of export offerings as key drivers for this growth. Collaborative efforts between the Pakistani Embassy in the U.S. and FPCCI are focused on exploring strategies for exponential growth in exports.

The consultative process, led by Ambassador Rizwan Saeed Sheikh, includes outreach initiatives with the U.S. Congress, Senate, federal administration, and various states. Mr. Sheikh underscored the significance of renewing and expanding the U.S. Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) Program, urging Pakistani exporters to capitalize on the opportunities presented by the U.S. market.

Saquib Fayyaz Magoon, Senior Vice President of FPCCI, called for diversification in export sectors beyond textiles, suggesting a focus on IT, pharmaceuticals, jewelry, and human resources, drawing parallels with neighboring India’s success. He stressed the necessity for Pakistani exporters to maintain quality and compliance standards while advocating for competitive business costs domestically.

Ambassador Sheikh also noted the vital role of the Pakistani diaspora in the U.S., with a significant presence across various sectors, and highlighted Pakistan’s status as a major importer of American cotton. He asserted that economic diplomacy could achieve outcomes beyond the reach of political diplomacy, given the economic stature of states like California and Texas.

The FPCCI’s insights and initiatives underscore the strategic importance of enhancing economic ties with the U.S., aiming to leverage existing relations and explore new avenues for trade and investment.
