Peshawar University’s Rs 2812 million budget presented for fiscal year 2012-13

Peshawar, July 02, 2012 (PPI-OT): An estimated deficit budget of 2812 million rupees was tabled in University of Peshawar Finance and Planning Committee to meet its recurrent needs for the fiscal year 2012-13. The receipts including government grants and those from University own resources for the coming fiscal year were estimated at 1565 million thus causing an annual deficit of 1247 million rupees.

The F and PC meeting was chaired by Vice Chancellor University of Peshawar Prof. Dr. Qibla Ayaz. Treasurer UoP Iftikhar Hussain Khan presented annual budget while Registrar Dr. Syed Fazli Hadi and representatives from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa finance and higher education department were also present on the occasion.

The Treasurer in his budget presentation said, special austerity measures have been planned for the coming year to reduce the budget deficit to 1046 million rupees. He added that the higher education commission has not provided the required grants in this fiscal year and we may have to face more funds shortage in the year 2012-13.

He said that the estimated commitment from HEC in the coming year is 880 million rupees which is far below our expectations. In addition the 20% increase in salary for 2012-13 would have an annual financial impact of around 170 million rupees. Payment of increase in salary to employees, however, has been made conditional to the provisions of the additional grants, he added.

Mr. Iftikhar Hussain Khan said the Higher Education Commission has not allocated funds for constituent colleges and schools of University of Peshawar, because they consider them as provincial subjects. Therefore the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government would be approached to provide an annual grant of 400 million for University schools and colleges for the year 2012-13, he added.

Members of Finance and Planning Committee were of the opinion to continue with the evening sessions in only those University departments which are economically feasible. They proposed to keep special check on expenditures including electricity consumption and purchase of generators, new furniture etc.

He budget was recommended to be placed before the forth coming meeting of University syndicate.
