Islamabad, President Asif Ali Zardari has called for the creation of “technology highways” in Pakistan to boost IT infrastructure and modern skills education, aiming to prepare Pakistani students for the knowledge economy. This initiative seeks to bridge the digital divide and enhance students’ competitiveness in both local and global job markets.
According to Press Information Department, President Zardari discussed these ideas with Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmad Akhtar, Vice Chancellor of Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU), during a meeting at Aiwan-e-Sadr today. The President emphasized the importance of equipping students with laptops to increase educational access and technology skills.
During the meeting, Dr. Akhtar briefed the President on QAU’s contributions to quality education, its programs, and other administrative affairs. President Zardari highlighted the critical role of educational institutions like QAU in developing skilled professionals such as doctors, engineers, nurses, and teachers, who are essential for meeting both domestic and international demands.
President Zardari also mentioned the potential of exporting trained human resources to countries experiencing skill shortages, which could help generate foreign exchange for Pakistan. He stressed the need for universities to focus on producing professionals ready to meet these market needs.
Further, the President called for improvements in the quality of education and character-building among students. He proposed that top position holders at QAU should receive Presidential Awards with cash prizes as an incentive for excellence in their studies.
The Vice Chancellor informed the President that QAU ranks among the top universities globally, positioned at 315th in global rankings, and is prioritizing research with significant societal impact. Digitalization remains a top priority for the university.
President Zardari appreciated QAU’s role in the academic sector and assured the Vice Chancellor of his support in resolving the university’s financial issues, pledging to take the matter to the appropriate forum for further action.
