Punjab Braces for Continued Monsoon Rains, Prepares for Flood Risks

Lahore: Punjab is set to experience another 24 hours of monsoon rains, which have already impacted several districts, raising river and dam levels and prompting moderate to low-level flood warnings. The ongoing monsoon season, which has been marked by significant rainfall, is expected to continue affecting the region.

According to Directorate General Public Relation – Govt of Punjab announcement issued on 06 August 2024, recent rains have led to moderate flooding in the Indus River at Chashma and Taunsa, with lower level floods at Tarbela and Kala Bagh. The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Director General Irfan Ali Kathia assured that all necessary preparations have been made to mitigate potential flood risks, following directives from the Chief Minister of Punjab. The administration has urged citizens to adhere to safety guidelines and remain vigilant.

This year’s monsoon has already resulted in 54 fatalities and 141 injuries across Punjab, predominantly from lightning strikes and the collapse of weak structures. The PDMA emphasized the importance of avoiding dilapidated buildings and has established a helpline (1129) for emergency assistance. Financial support is being provided to families affected by the monsoon tragedies.
