Lahore, The Punjab provincial cabinet, in its first meeting chaired by Maryam Nawaz Sharif, the first woman Chief Minister of Punjab, has unanimously approved the Ramzan Nighaban Relief Package 2024, a significant step aimed at supporting over 27 million deserving individuals across the province during the holy month of Ramadan.
According to Directorate General Public Relation – Govt of Punjab, the ambitious relief program will see the distribution of more than 6.5 million relief packages directly to the homes of deserving families. Each package, designed to alleviate the financial burden on the province’s most vulnerable populations, will include essential food items such as ghee and 2 kg of chickpea flour (besan), ensuring a more accessible and joyous Ramadan for many.
In her remarks, Chief Minister Sharif emphasized the importance of quality control in the distribution process, assigning the responsibility to the district administration and the Punjab Food Authority. She highlighted the innovative use of technology, with the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) developing a dedicated app and dashboard to monitor the delivery of these essential packages, thereby ensuring transparency and efficiency in the initiative.
Sharif also addressed the need for vigilant monitoring of market prices during Ramadan, directing the newly formed special committee of provincial ministers to oversee the effective implementation of the relief package. This committee is tasked with ensuring the welfare of the people through diligent coordination and monitoring efforts.
Furthermore, the cabinet approved the formation of several standing committees, including the Cabinet Standing Committee on Finance and Development, Cabinet Standing Committee on Legal Affairs, and Cabinet Standing Committee on Law and Order, demonstrating a comprehensive approach to governance and development in the province.
The meeting, attended by provincial ministers, the Chief Secretary, Inspector General of Police, senior officials, and various department heads, also offered an opportunity for the ministers to receive a detailed briefing on the cabinet’s procedures under the Punjab Government Rules of Business 2011.
