Lahore: Following directives from Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif, Punjab Police has escalated its efforts to combat electricity theft across the province. The intensified crackdown targets individuals involved in illegal activities that result in financial losses to the national treasury. Recent reports indicate a significant number of arrests and legal actions against the perpetrators.
According to Directorate General Public Relation – Govt of Punjab announcement issued on 04 September 2024, since the beginning of the year, Punjab Police has apprehended 41,995 individuals accused of electricity theft. A total of 73,515 cases have been filed, with legal proceedings completed and challans submitted for 48,056 cases. The courts have convicted 6,632 offenders. In Lahore alone, the numbers are equally striking, with 21,483 arrests and 21,911 cases registered.
Inspector General of Punjab, Dr. Usman Anwar, has mandated that operations against electricity theft be conducted impartially and has called for an increase in the rate of challan submissions. He stressed the importance of arresting absconders and improving recovery rates. Dr. Anwar also instructed that cases be registered promptly and that a stringent approach be maintained in cooperation with electricity companies. He affirmed that police teams are fully supporting these companies in the crackdown and emphasized that the zero-tolerance policy against electricity theft will persist.
