Islamabad: A recent meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Rightsizing, chaired by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, focused on evaluating the Ministry of Railways’ efforts to reduce its workforce. The committee discussed the ongoing implementation of rightsizing measures across federal ministries, with a particular emphasis on the railways.
According to a statement by Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the Establishment Division reported to the committee that confirmations had been received from 29 ministries and one constitutional body regarding the abolition of 11,877 posts, in addition to 4,660 positions classified as dying posts.
During the meeting, the Ministry of Railways presented a detailed overview of its workforce reduction strategy. The ministry has identified 95,859 sanctioned positions, of which 17,101 have already been abolished. An additional 5,695 posts are currently in the process of being eliminated. Plans are also underway to eliminate 15,000 more positions as part of the ministry’s rightsizing efforts.
The presentation highlighted the ministry’s initiatives to enhance operational efficiency and optimize resource allocation. The focus is on aligning its functions with its core mission while reducing redundant posts to improve overall effectiveness.
The meeting concluded with a directive for continued implementation of rightsizing measures across federal ministries. The committee emphasized a phased approach to ensure efficiency and sustainable policy outcomes.
