Recovery Efforts Continue in Srinagar Boat Tragedy, Toll Rises to Eight

Srinagar, The recovery of another victim’s body twelve days after a boat capsizing in the River Jhelum has increased the death toll to eight. The latest victim, a minor boy named Farhan Waseem Parry, was found in the Noorbagh area of Srinagar, in Indian occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the body of another young boy, Haziq Showkat, was retrieved near the old Zero Bridge the day before. Both bodies were taken to SMHS Hospital to complete the necessary formalities. The community in Ganderbal has gathered in large numbers to mourn and extend their condolences to the families of the victims.

The fatal incident took place on April 16, when a boat carrying students to school overturned in Ganderbal. The tragedy claimed the lives of six individuals initially, including a mother and her two sons. Locals have expressed that the absence of a nearby bridge, with an under-construction footbridge near the accident site languishing incomplete for nearly ten years, has compelled them to rely on dangerous boat crossings.

The incident has profoundly impacted the community, with residents offering prayers for the deceased and their families during Friday prayers in local mosques. Search operations continue as authorities strive to locate one more person still missing since the accident.
