Karachi: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has launched an initiative to create a detailed development map from the Union Council to the town level across Sindh. This new mapping strategy aims to streamline development efforts by preventing duplication and filling existing gaps in public infrastructure, education, health, sports, and recreational services.
According to Chief Minister Sindh, the decision was influenced by a detailed briefing from Dr. Nadeem Zafar, Chief of the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, which outlined the current demographics, including data on education, health, and other key sectors from the 2023 census. The meeting, held at the Chief Minister’s House, was attended by key officials including Chief Secretary Asif Haider Shah, Principal Secretary Agha Wasif, and Chairman P and D Najam Shah.
The Chief Minister emphasized the need for accurate data to effectively address the influx of migrants into Sindh from other regions and countries. He highlighted the importance of understanding the impact of migration on the province’s resources to better plan policy and service delivery. This includes the establishment of a data bank by the P and D Department, which will be updated regularly through surveys.
Further discussions revealed critical regional disparities, such as the 22.7% of children out of school in Karachi Central—the highest in the region—and Thatta’s alarming 75.8% of children not attending school, coupled with the lowest literacy rate of 26.9%. Another stark contrast noted was between the availability of electricity in Karachi Central, where 99.1% of houses are electrified, versus Tharparkar, a major electricity producer with only 19.4% of households having access to power.
The Chief Minister called for a complete mapping of residential electricity access to potentially expand solar energy solutions to underserved homes. He directed the Provincial Bureau of Statistics to work closely with the Sindh Bureau of Statistics to conduct these surveys and create facility maps for each union council and town, focusing particularly on less developed districts.
This initiative reflects a significant step towards equitable development and resource allocation within the province, aiming to enhance the quality of life for all residents in Sindh.
