Six cops injured in attack by army personnel in IOK

Srinagar, May 24, 2014 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, at least six policemen were injured after a verbal brawl between the personnel of police and Indian Army’s High Altitude Warfare School (HAWS) at the tourist resort of Sonamarg turned ugly. Media reports said that a vehicle of HAWS had fled after hitting a taxi at Sonamarg. Soon after the incident, the driver of the taxi filed a complaint with local police station and the cops swung into action to nab the army vehicle.

When the cops spotted the vehicle near Sonamarg, they stopped it and started inquiring about the hit-and-run incident from the personnel travelling in it. The cops’ questioning irritated the army personnel who started shouting at the cops, leading to a verbal brawl.

The army men beat up, abused and attacked the cops, injuring at least six of them. The injured policemen were rushed to Primary Health Centre Sonamarg wherefrom two of them were shifted to a hospital in Kangan. The army men also snatched a loaded rifle from a cop.

Later, police raided the army camp at Nilgrar in Sonamarg and arrested a Hawaldar and a Subedar along with the snatched rifle. It also seized the army vehicle.

Reports said that later the army personnel barged into Sonamarg Police Station and resorted to indiscriminate firing. “They fired scores of bullets and some of the bullets hit the walls of the police station,” In-Charge Station House Officer Sonamarg, Irfan Ahmed Malik, said.

The reports said that the army men went berserk after coming out from the police station and started beating everyone. “I tried to stop them but they beat me to pulp,” Sarpanch Sonamarg, Nazir Ahmed, said. Soon after the incident, locals staged forceful protests at Sonamarg market and demanded action against the erring army personnel.
