SMEDA Launches Grant Program to Boost Global Reach of Pakistani SMEs

Islamabad: The Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (SMEDA) has introduced a new initiative aimed at assisting small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Pakistan to achieve international certification and accreditation. This move is designed to enhance their global competitiveness and increase export capabilities.

The SME Certification and International Accreditation Grant Program seeks to provide comprehensive support to SMEs by covering costs associated with achieving internationally recognized certifications. This aligns with the vision of the Prime Minister of Pakistan to integrate small and micro-level enterprises from the informal sector into the formal economy, thereby availing themselves of government incentives and facilities.

Under the guidance of the Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Industries and Production, Haroon Akhtar Khan, SMEDA assures that the program will be implemented transparently, with applications processed on a first-come, first-served basis. This approach aims to empower SMEs with certifications that are recognized worldwide, thereby boosting their ability to compete in the global market.

Start-ups and women entrepreneurs are particularly encouraged to apply for the grant. SMEDA has streamlined the application process to be both convenient and transparent. Additionally, expert consultancy is made available to SMEs, providing guidance to improve processes and strengthen business operations, contributing to national economic growth.

In Pakistan, around seven million small and medium establishments contribute significantly to the economy, accounting for 40 percent of GDP, creating 78 percent of non-agricultural employment, and generating 30 percent of exports. However, many of these enterprises operate on a small scale and lack documentation, limiting their access to finance and international trade opportunities.

To address these challenges, SMEDA is committed to supporting SMEs through various initiatives, including the current grant program. SME experts believe that this program, in line with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s vision of formalization and export promotion, will help eligible SMEs achieve international standards and compete effectively on a global scale.

Entrepreneurs interested in the program can apply through the SMEDA website or the SME Registration Portal at no cost.
