Berlin, May 18, 2014 (PPI-OT): The first solo exhibition of art work by Huma Bhabha, a US citizen of Pakistani origin opened at Veneklasen Werner Gallery here in Berlin. The art pieces featuring sculptures and collage drawings were created in 2013 when Bhabha was artist-in-residence at the American Academy in Berlin.
The influence of German art on the artist like the German Expressionism, the sculptures of George Baselitz and the photo drawings of Arnulf Rainer can be felt in her this new body of work, says a press release received here today from Berlin.
Bhabha was born in Karachi in 1962 and currently lives and works in New York. Her approach to form is raw and visceral, suggesting violence and lending the work powerful emotional and political overtones. The artist draws freely upon the history of figurative sculpture evoking Greek and Egyptian statuary and fertility icons.
Her choice of material includes Styrofoam, wood, metal, Terra cotta, and cork, which she employs in her totems and fragmented figures. Archaeology is an important touchstone for the artist, referencing the raw landscapes of her native town, Karachi to Robert Smithson’s “Monuments of Passaic” and the post-industrial cities of upstate New York, where she now resides. The Exhibition will remain open till June 28, 2014.
