Leh, Prominent climate activist Sonam Wangchuk has raised serious allegations against the Indian government, claiming plans are afoot to sell off Ladakh’s mountains to private industrial and mining interests, threatening the region’s ecological and cultural integrity.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Wangchuk, who has been on a hunger strike in Leh for nearly two weeks, voiced concerns over unfulfilled promises and the erosion of democratic rights in Ladakh. He criticized the central government for not honoring commitments made to the people of Ladakh, especially concerning the protection of their land and democratic structures.
The activist highlighted the sense of betrayal felt by the local population due to these unmet assurances, pointing to a growing disillusionment with the government’s stewardship of the region. In response, Wangchuk called for a legally binding multi-party agreement to secure Ladakh’s future and suggested that protests, supported by the global community, could be an effective way to draw attention to these critical issues.
