KARACHI: Swedish companies operating in Pakistan are facing significant challenges due to high tax rates, energy prices, and difficulties in transferring foreign currencies, Ms. Alexandra Berg von Linde. In a meeting with the Karachi Chamber of Commerce & Industry (KCCI), she highlighted that over 40 Swedish companies, including many well-known brands, have been established in Pakistan for decades but are encountering these hurdles in the current economic environment.
According to Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the ambassador emphasized the potential for investment in Pakistan but stressed the need for addressing these challenges to create a more conducive environment for foreign investors. During the meeting, attended by notable figures such as Honorary Consul General of Sweden Zeelaf Munir and KCCI leadership, the ambassador reiterated Sweden’s interest in enhancing cooperation with Pakistan, particularly in sustainability, digitalization, and green transitions.
Ambassador von Linde also noted the work of the Swedish Business Council in promoting trade between the two countries, describing it as an entry point for Swedish companies interested in the Pakistani market. She also commented on the GSP Plus system, acknowledging Pakistan’s efforts to align with international conventions as part of its economic engagements with the European Union.
The ambassador highlighted the milestone of 75 years of diplomatic relations between Sweden and Pakistan, noting the mutual respect and partnership that have characterized their interactions over the decades. She also praised the role of Pakistani students in Sweden, who contribute to the bilateral relationship by returning with specialized knowledge and launching innovative business ideas.
The meeting also featured remarks from Senior Vice President KCCI, Zia ul Arfeen, who expressed satisfaction with recent bilateral political consultations and highlighted the EU’s role as Pakistan’s largest export destination. He called for enhanced bilateral trade volumes and urged both countries to explore business opportunities in various sectors including textiles, agriculture, and renewable energy.
