Washington, A report by an independent US Congressional research group has revealed that the scope and scale of human rights abuses in India have increased under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the report titled “India: Human Rights Assessment,” released by the Congressional Research Service (CRS), indicated that “the reported scope and scale of abuses has increased under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party, particularly since their reelection in 2019.”
The CRS report noted that the United Nations, other intergovernmental organizations, and numerous nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) have expressed similar concerns about human rights abuses in India. The Congressional Research Service is an independent research wing of the US Congress that provides reports on significant issues to help members of Congress make informed decisions.
The latest CRS report follows the State Department’s 2023 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices, which highlighted numerous human rights abuses in India, with some attributed to state and federal governments or their agents. This report also coincides with a series of articles in American media outlets critical of the human rights situation in India.
The 2023 Human Rights Report includes a new section on India’s “transnational repression against individuals in another country,” noting that the Indian government has engaged in transnational repression against journalists, members of diaspora populations, civil society activists, and human rights defenders.
