Business Leaders Welcome 27th Amendment, Anticipate Economic Boost

Karachi: Business community leaders have expressed support for the proposed 27th Amendment, viewing it as a step towards economic stability and constitutional efficiency. Mian Zahid Hussain, President of the Pakistan Businessmen and Intellectuals Forum and other key roles, endorsed the amendment, highlighting its potential to restructure state institutions and enhance investor confidence.

The amendment focuses on revising Article 243, which pertains to the command of the Armed Forces, by suggesting the creation of a Chief of Defence Forces position. This role would consolidate military command under the Army Chief, who would be recognized as the head of all military forces. Additionally, the bill includes provisions for lifelong privileges for five-star officers.

Hussain stressed the importance of a stable legal environment for economic growth, noting that the amendment could foster long-term stability in state institutions. Improved coordination between military services is seen as a crucial factor for national security, which in turn is expected to attract foreign investment.

A significant aspect of the amendment is the establishment of a Federal Constitutional Court, tasked with cases involving constitutional interpretation and fundamental rights. This would shift the Supreme Court’s focus primarily to appellate functions and propose changes to the appointment and transfer of High Court judges.

Hussain underscored the necessity of an independent judiciary to address business disputes efficiently. The new court could help expedite resolutions and decrease judicial backlogs, which is essential for the business community’s contribution to the national GDP. He noted that political stability is closely linked to foreign direct investment, urging the government to assure investors of economic stability during these changes.

The business community calls for the government to engage with key stakeholders, including economists and legal experts, to ensure the amendment supports a stable and prosperous economic future. The final version should protect democratic norms, provincial financial autonomy, and judicial independence to promote a positive economic trajectory for Pakistan.
