Canadian High Commissioner Discusses Economic Initiatives with Pakistani Finance Minister

Islamabad, Canadian High Commissioner to Pakistan, H.E Ms. Leslie Scanlon, met with Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb today to discuss ongoing economic reforms and collaborations between Canada and Pakistan. The meeting highlighted Pakistan’s recent financial milestones and future strategies to enhance economic stability and growth.

According to Press Information Department, Minister Aurangzeb briefed High Commissioner Scanlon on the successful completion of the nine-month Stand-By Arrangement with the International Monetary Fund and ongoing discussions for further engagement. He detailed the government’s efforts in broadening the tax base, implementing end-to-end digitalization, and undertaking administrative reforms. The Finance Minister also emphasized the government’s commitment to privatizing State-Owned Enterprises, noting significant investor interest in the privatization of Pakistan International Airlines.

The meeting also covered improvements in the energy sector, including the reconstitution of DISCO boards with private sector experts to boost efficiency. Furthermore, Minister Aurangzeb highlighted the Special Investment Facilitation Council’s role in creating a conducive environment for foreign investments. High Commissioner Scanlon acknowledged the Pakistani government’s efforts and assured continued Canadian support for Pakistan’s socio-economic development.
