Islamabad, The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) has approved a comprehensive slate of nineteen development projects across various sectors, reflecting a significant push towards infrastructure enhancement and economic resilience in Pakistan.
According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the ECNEC meeting, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, focused on accelerating efforts in regions affected by recent floods, particularly in Balochistan. The committee approved four sub-components of a $400 million World Bank-funded Integrated Flood Resilience and Adaptation Programme aimed at reconstruction and rehabilitation in the province.
Further commitments were made to Sindh, where ECNEC approved the revised Flood Response Emergency Housing Project, budgeted at 296 billion rupees. Additionally, the Green Line Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) in Karachi received approval for operationalization at a newly rationalized cost of 13.502 billion rupees.
Among significant CPEC (China-Pakistan Economic Corridor) initiatives, ECNEC cleared the re-alignment of the Karakoram Highway (KKH) between Thakot and Raikot, set to cost 13.067 billion RMB, and the revised plan for the New Gwadar International Airport, which is expected to become operational within the calendar year.
Other key projects greenlit include the Lowari Tunnel’s mechanical and electrical works, the 48 MW Jagran Hydro Power Station, and nationwide health initiatives like the Sehat Sahulat Program and the Prime Minister’s Programme for Elimination of Hepatitis C Infection, the latter with a budget of 68.25 billion rupees.
The meeting also tasked the Ministry of National Health Services to devise an implementation plan for the health initiatives and directed the Planning Commission to review the Public Sector Development Programme in light of current fiscal constraints, ensuring the timely completion of ongoing projects.
