Islamabad: The All Parties Hurriyat Conference Azad Jammu and Kashmir chapter has alleged that India is employing violence against women in the Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir as a tool of war, urging the international community to take note of what they describe as Indian state terrorism.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the allegations were made by the APHC-AJK Convener Ghulam Muhammad Safi, Mehmood Ahmad Saghar, Muhammad Farooq Rehmani, Advocate Pervez Ahmed, Shamim Shawl, and Mushtaq Ahmed Butt. In their statements issued in Islamabad on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, they asserted that women in the region have been persistently subjected to Indian state terrorism.
The leaders claimed that Indian soldiers have been granted extensive powers under certain laws, allowing them to violate the rights of Kashmiri women, especially following the political changes on August 5, 2019. They accused the Modi government, along with military and paramilitary forces, of using derogatory actions and comments to further their agenda in the occupied territory.
The APHC-AJK leaders presented figures, stating that since 1989, over 2,500 women have been killed and more than 11,000 women have faced desecration. Additionally, they reported that over 23,000 women have become widows in the last 35 years due to ongoing violence.
They highlighted the plight of women, including Aasiya Andrabi, Naheeda Nasreen, and Fehmeeda Sufi, who have been detained in New Delhi’s Tihar Jail and other facilities for the past five years.
The leaders argued that the mental torture faced by Kashmiri women is exacerbated by the killing of loved ones, arrests, and enforced disappearances, with sexual harassment by soldiers being a daily occurrence aimed at humiliating the local population.
They called upon international human rights organizations to exert pressure on India to halt the severe human rights violations against Kashmiri women, urging the global community to leverage its influence to end the reported atrocities, massacres, and injustices in the region.
