India to Rerun Voting at 11 Polling Stations in Manipur After Violence

New Delhi, Election authorities in India will rerun voting at 11 polling stations in the violence-hit northeastern state of Manipur on Monday following reports of violence and damage to voting machines. The state has been affected by ethnic clashes for several months, leading to heightened security concerns during the electoral process.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the chief electoral officer of Manipur issued a statement declaring the voting void at the 11 locations and announcing a fresh poll. The rerun follows Friday’s opening of voting in an election that will see nearly one billion people casting their ballots across the world’s most populous country. The voting process will continue through June 1.

The main opposition Congress party had called for a rerun at 47 polling stations in Manipur, alleging that election booths were captured and elections were rigged. The state has experienced significant violence, including clashes among armed groups and attempts to take over polling stations. Despite these security threats, voters turned out in large numbers.

Manipur has been embroiled in conflict between the majority Meitei and tribal Kuki-Zo people since May. The state is divided between the Meitei-controlled valley and the Kuki-dominated hills, with a no-man’s land separating the two regions. This area is monitored by federal paramilitary forces, reflecting the state’s volatile situation.

The rerun of voting in Manipur underscores the challenges facing India’s electoral process in regions with heightened ethnic tensions and ongoing violence. The situation remains closely monitored to ensure a safe and fair voting environment.
