Srinagar, In the lead-up to the parliamentary elections in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), Indian army and paramilitary troops have been conducting flag marches across the region. Officially stated as an effort to ensure a secure environment for the elections, these actions are perceived by many as attempts to intimidate the local populace.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the flag marches took place in several districts, including Budgam, Srinagar, and other areas of IIOJK, ostensibly to encourage participation in the upcoming polls. Scheduled elections for the three Lok Sabha seats in Kashmir are to occur on May 7 in Islamabad-Rajouri, May 13 in Srinagar, and May 20 in Baramulla.
District police and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) carried out these so-called confidence-building exercises across various districts, such as Ganderbal, Baramulla, Pulwama, Kulgam, Sopore, Shopian, Bandipora, and Budgam. Senior officers and jawans participated in what was described as an area domination exercise.
A police official claimed that the purpose of these flag marches was to “instill confidence in the voters of a secure and harmonious environment,” thereby encouraging their participation in the electoral process without fear. However, Kashmiri freedom activists have criticized these measures, asserting that the real intention behind the flag marches is to frighten the people under the pretext of preparing for the elections, casting doubt on the genuineness of the electoral process in the region.
