Islamabad Moves to Modernize Tax System with FBR Digitalization Plan

Islamabad, In a significant step toward modernizing Pakistan’s taxation system, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb chaired a meeting of the Steering Committee on the Digitalization of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), emphasizing the government’s commitment to integrating digital solutions into tax administration.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the meeting, held in Islamabad, brought together key stakeholders to propel the FBR towards a digital future aimed at enhancing tax collection efficiency and promoting economic growth. The committee selected McKinsey and Company, a globally recognized consulting firm, to lead the digitalization efforts after a rigorous selection process that included detailed technical evaluations by senior FBR officials and experts from Karandaaz Pakistan.

Director DFS Karandaaz Sharjeel Murtaza provided insights into the procurement process, noting that McKinsey and Company was chosen based on their comprehensive proposal, which stood out in both technical and financial assessments. The approval of McKinsey’s proposal paves the way for the initiation of a transformative digitalization project at FBR.

Finance Minister Aurangzeb lauded the procurement committee for its diligence in selecting a consulting service that aligns with the national interest, underscoring the importance of a result-oriented approach that leverages existing digitalization knowledge and targets early successes.

The committee discussed the current progress in digitalizing FBR’s operations and explored further opportunities to enhance the efficiency and transparency of Pakistan’s tax administration. This initiative is part of a broader effort to create a digitally empowered tax ecosystem through collaboration between the FBR and the private sector.

Attendees at the meeting included FBR Chairman, CEO of Karandaaz Waqas ul Hasan, Syed Ali Mahmood of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, along with other FBR representatives.

The meeting concluded with a consensus on the immediate commencement of the digitalization project, setting a progressive course for the future of Pakistan’s fiscal management.
