Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Treasury Advisor Highlights Challenges in Regional Power Sector

Peshawar, Amidst a challenging backdrop of regional power management, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Treasury Advisor Muzamil Aslam has voiced significant concerns over issues within the power sector, including allegations of electricity theft and systemic corruption.

According to Directorate General Information and PRs – Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Aslam pointed out that the power sector in Peshawar is beleaguered by an outdated system, negligence, and corruption, which contribute to its inefficiencies. He criticized the local power officials and the agencies under their control for purportedly stealing electricity from their own ministry. The advisor’s remarks came as part of a broader critique of the political and administrative landscape affecting the region’s electricity distribution and maintenance.

The correspondence includes a letter from Owais Leghari, Minister of Power and Electricity, to the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, requesting a meeting to address electricity theft in the area. Aslam’s statements also reflect broader frustrations with the financial and operational challenges facing the province’s power utilities, suggesting that recovery and loss prevention metrics in PESCO (Peshawar Electric Supply Company) and TESCO (Tribal Areas Electricity Supply Company) compare favorably against other regions like Quetta, Sukkur, and Hyderabad, despite systemic issues.

Further, Aslam hinted at broader financial and political dynamics, noting requests for funding from the federation and implied political maneuverings involving significant figures in other provinces.
