Islamabad: The Legal Forum for Kashmir has expressed strong disapproval of the recent arrests of several Kashmiri lawyers in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir. The organization described these detentions as severe violations of human rights, targeting individuals advocating for the region’s self-determination.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the LFK, in its statement, called for immediate international intervention to protect the legal professionals in the occupied territory. The forum criticized the use of laws such as the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and the Public Safety Act against lawyers, which it views as an attempt to suppress the legal advocacy essential for the Kashmiri people’s rights.
The arrests included high-profile figures such as the former president of the High Court Bar Association, Mian Abdul Qayoom, and lawyers Nazir Ahmed Ronga, Muhammad Ashraf Butt, and Advocate Mian Muzzafar. These detentions have been conducted under the controversial Public Safety Act, highlighting the ongoing struggle against what the LFK considers draconian laws aimed at stifling the Kashmiri voice.
In addition to condemning the arrests, the LFK has appealed to global human rights bodies to take decisive actions against these human rights violations and to consider sanctions against India for its policies in the region. Support also came from the Bar Associations of Rawalpindi and Islamabad, which echoed the call for action against the suppression of legal professionals in IIOJK.
