Karachi: Administrator Karachi Mohammad Hussain Syed has said that Karachi is the only big city in the world where mass transit system did not exist. In about all other cities of this magnitude, they had initiated some scheme in mass transit which provides better travel facilities to local population.
He expressed these views while addressing media representatives at the Karachi Press Club on Tuesday.
Administrator Karachi said However, City District Government Karachi has conducted a thorough study of the transport system in Karachi under coordination with JICA which helped preparing a comprehensive database.
He said start of mass transit project would essential in Karachi to provide better travel facilities to citizens. City government has in this connection prepared a comprehensive data base in the light of the micro study conducted with the cooperation of JICA. Private sector is invited to invest in this project.
Administrator Karachi said though under the present conditions city government was not in a position to begin work in this regard but it was having talks with international firms which have experience in this field. Replying a query, Administrator Karachi said measures were being taken to start work on the development schemes included in the current budget.
A meeting in this connection will be held today where important decisions were expected. He said action against land mafia under way in city and this could be made successful with the help and cooperation of media.
