Monitoring committees to be setup to restrain early age marriages: Abdul Rasheed Solangi

Karachi, April 08, 2015 (PPI-OT): The Secretary Women Development Department Mr. Abdul Rasheed Solangi has said that the Monitoring Committees will be setup in every district of Province of Sindh to ensure implementation of the Child Marriage Act. This he said while addressing in the training workshop organized by Women Development Department in collaboration with UNICEF for providing awareness about the adverse effect of early child marriages at local hotel.

The training workshop attended by 15 police officers and 15 advocates besides NGOs and officers of the department. The Secretary said that marriage laws of 1929 has been replaced by new laws which enhanced the marriage age from 16 to 18 years and violation in this regard is punishable for 2 to 3 years rigorous imprisonment with fine.

Mr. Abdul Rasheed Solangi said that the District Women Development Officer will be Secretary of Monitoring Committee in every district while Deputy Commissioner will be its Chairman. He further said that District Women Development Officer will lodge F.I.R. at police station for violation of marriage laws. The Coordinator UNICEF Dr. Jabeen, representatives of Aurat Foundation, Home Net and others also spoke on the occasion. Later, the questions and answers session was also held.
