Islamabad: Pakistan and Iran have signed agreements aimed at boosting bilateral trade and cooperation in the agriculture sector. These agreements were formalized during the visit of Pakistan’s Minister for National Food Security and Research, Rana Tanveer Hussain, to Iran. The visit included participation in a high-level ministerial meeting where Pakistan was represented by a delegation led by Hussain.
According to Radio Pakistan, the agreements signify Iran’s commitment to importing large quantities of rice from Pakistan. Additionally, obstacles that have previously hindered the export of Pakistani mangoes to Iran are set to be removed. The discussions also addressed issues related to mango import permits and foreign exchange, with Iran promising to resolve these matters.
Iran has further expressed its willingness to source 60 percent of its meat imports from Pakistan and to import corn, enhancing trade relations between the two nations. The Pakistan Agricultural Research Council, in collaboration with Iranian institutions, will engage in joint research endeavors to support these initiatives.
Moreover, the agreements include measures to expedite customs clearance processes, facilitating smoother agricultural trade. A significant outcome of the discussions is the establishment of a free trade agreement between Pakistan and Iran. To ensure the effective implementation of these agreements, a joint committee will convene every six months to review progress and address any challenges that may arise.
