Pakistan Begins Privatization of DISCOs, Announces Electricity Subsidies

Islamabad: Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar announced today that the government has initiated the privatization of Distribution Companies (DISCOs) following recent amendments to the State Owned Enterprises Act, aiming to enhance efficiency through private sector involvement.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, during a press conference with MQM leader Mustafa Kamal, Minister Tarar highlighted the long-standing issues of inefficiency and corruption within DISCOs. The decision to privatize aims to bring in competent professionals from the private sector to manage these entities. Additionally, the Information Minister revealed that the Prime Minister has authorized a significant subsidy of fifty billion rupees on electricity bills for consumers using up to two hundred units, to mitigate the financial burden during the summer season. The Prime Minister has also extended the electricity bill payment period by ten days.

Ongoing consultations about the Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and measures to combat overbilling and power theft are part of the government’s broader strategy to improve the energy sector’s reliability and affordability. MQM leader Mustafa Kamal, during the press conference, expressed confidence in the government’s initiatives, noting that these steps are expected to provide considerable relief to the public amid rising electricity bills.
