Islamabad: Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal chaired the 4th meeting of the Policy and Strategy Committee and the Oversight Board on Post-Flood Reconstruction Activities, focusing on recovery efforts following the devastating floods of 2022.
According to Press Information Department, the meeting gathered high-level officials including the Secretary Planning, Secretary Economic Affairs, Chief Secretaries from all provinces, and representatives from the World Bank, Asian Development Bank, UN agencies, and the EU. The agenda was to review decisions from previous meetings, discuss ongoing projects under the Resilient, Rehabilitation, and Reconstruction Framework (4RF), and update on coordination efforts and financial pledges related to flood reconstruction.
Minister Iqbal detailed the significant impact of the 2022 floods, which affected one-third of the country, displacing nearly 8 million people, and resulting in substantial economic and personal losses. The 4RF aims to enhance governance, revive economic opportunities, ensure social inclusion, and restore infrastructure in a resilient manner. The meeting highlighted a funding gap, with $10.9 billion pledged against an estimated need of $16.2 billion for recovery.
The session also addressed the urgency of implementing the Integrated Flood Resilience and Adaptation Project in Balochistan to assist affected homeowners and farmers, emphasizing the need for swift action to prevent further delays in flood recovery efforts. The minister stressed the importance of a robust monitoring and evaluation mechanism to ensure transparency and build trust among international partners.
