Pakistan’s Envoy Highlights Country’s Vulnerability to Climate Change at IRENA Assembly in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi, During the 14th Session of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Assembly held in Abu Dhabi, Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, Faisal Niaz Tirmizi, emphasized Pakistan’s acute vulnerability to climate change, ranking it as the fifth most affected country globally. The ambassador praised the efforts of IRENA under the leadership of Director General Francesco La Camera, and the UAE for their role in advancing global renewable energy initiatives.

According to Press Information Department, Ambassador Tirmizi detailed the severe impacts of climate change on Pakistan, including the devastating super floods of 2022, which resulted in significant loss of life, displacement of millions, and extensive economic damage. He highlighted the disparity between Pakistan’s low emissions contribution compared to larger nations and stressed the urgent need for enhanced international cooperation and climate finance to support vulnerable countries.

The ambassador lauded the UAE’s leadership in hosting COP28, which saw pivotal developments such as the operationalization of the Loss and Damage Fund, a critical step for countries severely impacted by climate disasters. Looking ahead, Ambassador Tirmizi outlined Pakistan’s ambitious plans to increase its renewable energy capacity, including hydropower, to 60% by 2030, aiming to achieve energy equity, affordability, and sustainability while significantly reducing emissions.

In his address, Ambassador Tirmizi called for a just and equitable global energy transition, urging IRENA members to support developing nations through accessible grants and concessional financing. This support is vital for enabling these countries to meet their renewable energy goals and to ensure a fair transition to greener energy sources.
