PM Sharif Focuses on Port Development to Boost Pakistan’s Export Capabilities

Karachi: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized the government’s commitment to developing Pakistani ports as a strategic move to enhance the country’s export potential and provide efficient sea corridors to Central Asian states and other countries.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, during a visit to the Hutchison Port, South Asian Pakistan Terminal in Karachi, Prime Minister Sharif detailed the economic benefits expected from improving port facilities, including significant earnings in foreign exchange from the trade activities of Central Asian states, China, and others through Pakistani ports. He stated that developing seaports is crucial for boosting the country’s exports.

On site, the Prime Minister received briefings about the terminal’s operations and expressed satisfaction with the standards maintained, noting that they align with international norms. He was informed that the terminal has the capacity to handle 3.5 million containers annually.

Further emphasizing the importance of modernizing port operations, Prime Minister Sharif instructed the Chairman of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to prioritize the installation of modern scanners at Pakistani ports. The visit was attended by federal ministers Muhammad Aurangzeb, Attaullah Tarar, Jam Kamal Khan, Qaisar Ahmed Sheikh, and Ahad Khan Cheema, along with Sindh Governor Kamran Khan Tessori, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, the Chairman of the FBR, and other high-ranking officials.
