PM Shehbaz Sharif Urges Global Investors to Harness Pakistan’s Clean Energy Potential

DUBAI: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has made a compelling call to international investors, urging them to explore Pakistan’s burgeoning clean energy and infrastructure opportunities. Speaking at the World Governments Summit in Dubai, he emphasized the need for strengthened climate financing and technology sharing to support emerging economies like Pakistan in achieving sustainable growth.

According to a statement by Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the Prime Minister highlighted Pakistan’s commitment to mobilizing domestic resources and implementing policy reforms to drive its energy transition. However, he stressed the critical role of international partnerships and financial support in achieving a global shift towards a green economy. The transition, he noted, requires an investment of $100 billion in Pakistan’s energy sector alone.

Prime Minister Sharif outlined Pakistan’s ambitious targets of achieving a 60 percent clean energy mix by 2030 and transitioning 30 percent of vehicles to electric mobility. Efforts are underway to rapidly scale up solar, wind, hydropower, and nuclear energy. The southern regions of Pakistan, he said, hold 50,000 megawatts of untapped wind energy potential, while northern hydropower projects will contribute an additional 13,000 megawatts of clean energy capacity.

He also detailed various policy reforms aimed at accelerating solar energy adoption, including tax exemptions, investment incentives, net metering, and waiving customs duties on solar equipment. Pakistan, he emphasized, offers a dynamic investment landscape with a young and tech-savvy population and a strategic location bridging South and Central Asia.

To further attract global capital, the government has established the Special Investment Facilitation Council, focusing on key sectors such as renewable energy, resilient infrastructure, technology, the digital economy, minerals, industrial development, and agricultural and food security.

Prime Minister Sharif also addressed the need for eco-friendly agricultural innovations to enhance productivity and ensure food security. The government is working on improving water efficiency through techniques such as drip irrigation and precision farming, alongside promoting agri-tech innovations with solar-powered irrigation systems.

In a broader geopolitical context, Sharif expressed hope for lasting peace in Palestine, advocating for a two-state solution based on pre-1967 boundaries with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital, in accordance with relevant UN resolutions.
